The assistance is well timed and coincides with stronger domestic apple prices which are helping to turn around the difficult economic conditions growers in the US's second largest apple production state are facing.

This season production is estimated to be around 300,000tonnes, some 33 per cent down on last season's crop which was valued at nearly $130m.

New York accounts for 10 per cent of US apple production and is second behind Washington. There are 675 growers in the state.
