Experiments in animals show that eating one or more apples a day might help reduce the risk of breast cancer.

The idea that an apple a day keeps the doctor away has a long history. Now it's backed by new evidence from a study out of Cornell University. Apple extracts were fed to a group of rats to see whether it could prevent breast cancer coming from exposure to a known carcinogen.

The animals were fed the equivalent of one, three or six apples a day and tumor incidence went down by 17, 39 and 44 per cent. Previous work by the group had shown how phytochemicals found in apples inhibited the growth of liver and colon cancer cells.
