Citrus: the star performer for Anecoop

Spanish co-op group Anecoop registered record-breaking sales volumes for the 2006-07 season, with citrus (and wine) the star performers.

Citrus volumes sold onto the domestic market and Anecoop’s 50 export markets rose by 5.13 per cent to 636,000 tonnes for the period, although values were slightly down, by 0.5 per cent.

Anecoop president Juan Safont said: “These figures prove that Anecoop is in a position to continue to grow its exports, especially to markets as demanding as those in Europe.”

Sales of citrus grew by 22.7 per cent to 339,000t following 2005-06’s frost-struck year, and accounted for almost half of Anecoop’s total product volume.

Non-citrus fruit, salads and vegetables fared less well in both volume and value terms. Salad and vegetable volumes declined by seven per cent, and non-citrus fruits by 11 per cent. However, within these sectors there were some success stories, with kaki fruit experiencing a volume rise from 15,490t to 16,804t.

There are already changes afoot that should help to boost the outcome for the 2007-08 season too. “For this season, we have set in motion a new phase,” said Anecoop director-general José María Planells. “Through our Profitable Citrus Plan, we are putting in place the necessary measures to ensure that every link in the citrus supply chain works together to ensure transparency in commercial exchanges, greater added value and a just and fair return to the grower.”
