The deal is effective for the 2002-03 season and is the result of Anecoop taking the initiative and approaching the regulatory body for the protected geographical indicator (PGI) Citrus fromValencia. According to Anecoop, a citrus supply group with a number of member co-operatives, it will bring Valencia citrus and its high standard of quality much closer to retailers and consumers.

The move will mean Anecoop co-operatives using the PGI label on their citrus and will in turn mean that the Ancoop sales network will have access to promotions and relevant materials at wholesale and retail point-of-sale.

The PGI covers standards for packing and packaging, registration of plantations, packhouses and other facilities and those varieties authorised to carry the label.

Citrus from Valencia president Enrique Blasco has welcomed Anecoop on board this season as it is one of the most experienced citrus marketing companies in Spain, he said. Meanwhile, Anecoop president Pepe Miquel believes the addition of the IGP label to his organisation's fruit will give added assurance of quality. 'We can no longer compete on price with production from other countries but we can compete on quality,' he said.
