Safeway has renewed its contracts with distributor Exel in a deal which totals approximately £60million per year, and ranges from three to five years.

The five new contracts are at Tamworth, Coventry, Heathrow, Droitwich and Stockton on Tees, and confirm the retailer's strong relationship with Exel. These new contracts offer strengthened job security to employees.

Safeway's head of logistics Mike Sturt said: 'We are delighted to extend our long standing relationship with Exel, which continues to be one of our major third party partners. We look forward to enjoying the benefits of working with a global partner as we extend our influence upstream.' Guy Elliott, managing director for Exel's retail and consumer food sector, said: 'Exel enjoys a very special relationship with Safeway. These contract renewals for all of our sites will enable us to continue to demonstrate the strength of Exel's approach and service offering, central to which is employee development.'
