Americans looking for global expansion

PMA president Bryan Silbermann intends to continue the international expansion of the group.

He told last week's Packer newspaper: “There is a clear need in the global marketplace for the type of information the PMA can provide. We showed [through recent PMA events in Chile, Australia and Mexico] that people value the information and will pay a fee to receive it.

“We've seen that working with local organisations in each country has been a win-win for PMA and for them - we saw the value of using the local association's marketplace knowledge and on-site capabilities in a powerful partnership,” Silbermann said.

PMA's staff and budget has increased significantly in the seven years since South African born Silbermann became president, in response to industry demands for events and services. “We expect to end 2003 with revenues around $12 million and expenses very close to that figure,” he told the Packer. “For 2004, our aggressive budget calls for revenues of $13m. One reason for this growth is that we need to diversify revenues - in 2003, nearly two-thirds of our revenues came from the PMA Fresh Summit. Less than a quarter comes from member dues and the rest comes from other events as well as the sale of products and services.”

With a record 16,000 plus attendance at this year's Fresh Summit, the PMA appears to be moving in the right direction.
