All eyes on Berlin

his is the unmissable annual event in the fresh produce calendar, for which companies from around the world gather in Berlin to exhibit their products and services.

The world’s leading trade fair for the fresh fruit and vegetable industry, Fruit Logistica, attracts more than 2,400 companies from across the entire value chain - small and medium-sized suppliers as well as global players - and some 56,000 visitors.

Taking place on 8-10 February this year, the trade show will provide a platform for initiating business deals with worldwide contacts and an opportunity to gain valuable insights into the latest trends in the fresh produce business.

Following the success of previous years, FreshConex, the international congress for the fresh fruit trade, will be held alongside Fruit Logistica. “New opportunities in marketing for fresh produce convenience” is the focus on Wednesday 8 February, followed by “food safety” on the second day, and “Technology and new product development” on the last day. -

Events to look out for:

Wednesday 8 February

14.30-16.00: Sustainability and productivity - can’t have one without the other

How new crop protection law is changing the fresh food business

Exhibitor Forum: Gr. Stern - Room Sydney

(between halls 10.2/11.2)

“Europe is waking up to the urgent need to raise agricultural productivity. To meet the demand in a sustainable way, key factors have to be taken into account including environmental, social and economic concerns and, as a direct result, how crop protection is regulated.”

11.00-12.00: Optimising urban retail logistics

Hall Forum hall 26

“Urban areas suffer from increasing traffic congestion, noise and exhaust emissions. Delivery vehicles struggle to meet deadlines. Local supply logistics are in dire need of optimisation. The project presented here aims to save costs, reduce noise and CO2 emissions and optimise deliveries. One of the unique features: co-operation between competitors.”

Thursday 9 February

11.00-12.30: From sustainable agriculture to sustainable business: The role of partnerships and co-operation

Exhibitor Forum: Gr. Stern - Room Sydney

“Twenty years ago, Chiquita started a journey towards sustainability in collaboration with the Rainforest Alliance. Since then partnerships and co-operation with organisations and customers have been fundamental. Today we want to share our experience and learnings, as we move from sustainable agriculture to sustainable business. The road ahead is still long, but the time has come to celebrate this anniversary.”

11.00-12.00: The global citrus market

Hall Forum hall 26

“This forum presents the current status and future trends in global citrus production and consumption in Europe, the southern hemisphere and other key supplier countries. The market is rapidly changing. Where will production increase? Where will it be cut back? What are the determining factors? What is the outlook for the future? How can trading companies adapt to the situation?”

15.00-16.00: The new banana business

Hall Forum hall 26

“Bananas are among the most popular consumer products. Keeping them fresh involves a number of unique challenges. The market is highly competitive and consumer approval sometimes comes with a high price. What is the main focus today? How can products and services be improved? How can consumption be increased?”

Friday 10 February

11.00-12.00: Regional sourcing on an international scale

Hall Forum hall 26

“Regional sourcing is one of the key issues in the trade. The focus is on familiarity and trust between products, consumers and the POS. Many suppliers label their products sold on foreign and domestic markets with the country of origin and use this as a marketing focus. How can this successful concept be further expanded? How can co-operation be optimised across the entire supply chain? How can the fresh produce trade become more directly involved?”

13.00-14.00: Innovation in the fresh produce business

Hall Forum hall 26

“What has become of the previous Fruit Logistica Innovation Award winners? Are these products successful in the market? Are they popular in the eyes of consumers? What can be learned from this? And what makes a fresh produce innovation successful?”

14.30-15.00: Presentation of the Fruit

Logistica Innovation Awards 2012
