Small fruit and veg shops in Wolverhampton are angry at plans to bus people into the local market to buy their fresh produce amid fears it will cost them vital business.

Approximately 100,000 people have been identified as having the poorest diets in the city are to be picked up from their doorsteps on a special “fruit bus” which will whisk them to the market. The plan is to encourage them to swap junk food for fresh produce.

The scheme is funded by a £140,000 lottery grant, which will see vouchers for fruit and vegetables dished out across Wolverhampton. The idea by Wolverhampton City Primary Care Trust follows alarming research which reveals a quarter of Wolverhampton residents eat no fruit or veg.
