Film manufacturer Alesco is using eco-power to produce a new range of compostable biofilms for apples.

The German plastic manufacturer only uses renewable energies derived from waterpower for the production of the compostable biofilms.

Alesco pre-bought the volume of power it needs for the production of biofilms in 2008. The eco-power is certified by power company RWE, which also guarantees the energy’s carbon-dioxide-free production.

Due to the exclusive application of CO2-neutral eco-power in the production of its biofilms, Alesco’s films made of renewable materials are “now even more eco-friendly”, it claims.

Philipp Depiereux, Alesco’s manager, said: “We as a company are responsible for our environment and our descendants. For this reason we pondered on how to produce our compostable biofilms as resource-protecting as possible.”

With the exclusive use of CO2-neutral eco-power during the production of biofilms, this approach is consequently pursued when purchasing energy.

According to the Bundesverband für Energie- und Wasserwirtschaft (Federal Association of Energy and Water Economy), the part of renewable energies in Germany is about 14 per cent.

The designated target of the European Union - 12.5 per cent by 2010 - has already been reached in Germany.
