Aldi named cheapest supermarket, but not by much

Aldi was named as the UK’s cheapest supermarket in a new independent price comparison survey, Grocer 33, by trade magazine The Grocer last week (15 July).

The study on a basket of 33 everyday items revealed Morrisons to be the most expensive Big Four retailer with a basket that was 18 per cent (£9.86) more expensive than Aldi, whose basket cost a total of just £54.89.

In addition, the same products cost £18.36 more at the most expensive UK supermarket Waitrose (£73.25).

The basket of 33 items included seven fresh produce items, namely: spring onions, oranges, grapes, red peppers, mushrooms, butternut squash and Birds Eye peas.

Julie Ashfield, managing director of buying at Aldi, said: “For all the talk about promotions, the reality is that when it comes to price, nobody can match Aldi. We’ve always promised our customers that we will never be beaten on price and, yet again, this survey confirms it.”

Commenting on its Grocer 33 results, The Grocer said Aldi edged out its rival discounter Lidl by just 2p.

Aldi offered the lowest price for 25 items and was exclusively cheapest for the spring onions. Lidl was cheapest for 24 products.

Yet, The Grocer said the discounters were not as far ahead of the rest of the supermarkets as usual. A combination of everyday low pricing, Aldi Price Match and Clubcard Prices appears to be helping Tesco close the gap, it said.

At £58.25, Tesco was £3.36 more expensive than Aldi – a difference of just 6.1 per cent. The Grocer said its shopping list at Tesco was 4.5 per cent cheaper this week than it would have been in July 2023, whereas Aldi was just 0.7 per cent cheaper and Lidl down 1 per cent.

Tesco was also exclusively cheapest for the oranges.

Meanwhile, Asda was 8.8 per cent more expensive than Aldi. The gap was despite coming in exclusively cheapest for Birds Eye peas and red peppers.

Sainsbury’s was £5.34 more expensive than Aldi overall. This was despite coming out 5.7 per cent cheaper than 12 months ago.

Aldi is the fourth-largest supermarket in the UK, and consumer champion Which? has named Aldi as the UK’s cheapest supermarket for each of the past three years, and for every month so far this year.
