Aldi is opening its first-ever convenience store in the UK.
The discounter is set to open a new 7,000 sq ft store in Kilburn High Road in North London on the site of a former Peacocks store.
The move into the growing convenience market, which is currently dominated by the likes of Sainsbury's and Tesco, follows positive growth for the German retailer in the UK market after it achieved a record 3.3 per cent grocery market share in the most recent retail data from Kantar Worldpanel. It is also a departure from the firm's commitment to open up only 10,000 sq ft stores which can offer parking.
'Continued pressure on household budgets has helped Aldi, Lidl and Iceland to record market-beating growths, and I can't see this fading anytime soon,' said Fraser McKevitt, retail analyst at Kantar.
