Aldi head office expansion April 2018

Aldi's head office is in Atherstone, Warwickshire

Aldi has completed the second stage of its head office expansion and submitted new plans to further extend the site.

This £70 million investment has added more than 150,000 sq ft to Aldi’s Warwickshire head office, including new facilities such as a ‘Taste Kitchen’ and a state-of-the-art development kitchen where the retailer’s UK-based buying team can create and test new products.

The discounter has also submitted a planning application for the third phase of its head office expansion, with plans to invest a further £57m on 120,000 sq ft of land adjacent to the current Atherstone site.

Once the work is finished, there will be a significant increase in the number of employees working at the Atherstone site across a number of departments, including its UK-based buying team and IT, marketing and logistics functions.

Matthew Barnes, chief executive at Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “This investment to enhance our support functions and logistics capabilities is about putting the long-term foundations in place to continue opening more stores across the UK.

“We have a unique business model that makes us the most efficient supermarket in Britain and we will continue investing in this to deliver the quality products and low prices that our customers have come to expect.”

Aldi has invested over £2 billion over the last five years in opening new stores and improving its distribution capabilities across the UK. New distribution centres in Sheppey, Kent and Sawley, Derbyshire are also under development as the retailer plans to expand to 1,000 UK stores by 2022.
