Discounter Aldi is to hire more than 1,000 staff in Ireland in the long-term, with 400 new jobs created in the near future on completion of its new distribution centre.
The budget retailer stated that it now has major expansion plans in Ireland as a result of its increasing sales in the country, which rose by 23 per cent in the first quarter of 2009.
Around 400 people will be employed during the construction of a distribution centre in Mitchelstown, County Cork and a further 160 would then be based there upon completion.
The 56,905sqm distribution plant at Mitchelstown, expected to open in early 2011, will mainly supply stores in Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford and Clare.
A further 490 positions will be created as new stores continue to open following a €350 million (£314.7m) investment in 35 new outlets throughout the country.
"We already employ 1,200 people in Ireland and we will see this reach almost 2,000 over the next three years," Donald Mackay, managing director of Aldi Stores Ireland, said in a statement.
