Bowie: Supermarket events help make Scottish farmers more visible

NFU Scotland is working with Aldi to host a series of in-store promotional events to engage consumers with Scottish produce.

The events, due to take place in stores in Inverness, Dumfries and Prestwick, follow other successful supermarket days held during last year.

NFU Scotland members are able to meet consumers during the day, assist with in-store produce tastings and help tell the story of Scottish produce.

Aldi has a growing presence in Scottish retail and has been keen to highlight its support of local producers in recent months.

“While there has been good progress in the last year, it is clear that supermarkets can go much further to support Scotland’s hard working farmers, while delivering greater quality to Scotland’s shoppers,” said NFU Scotland president Allan Bowie.

“In 2015, our activity at supermarkets meant that our members were more visible and active than ever before. The farmers involved received overwhelming support from shoppers who want to be able to buy more Scottish produce.”

Bowie urged consumers to support farmers by engaging with the events and put Scottish produce on their dinner tables. “We will continue to engage with other retailers and supermarkets to encourage them to stock and promote Scottish produce, whilst encouraging consumers to buy local, whether that be it from the supermarket shelves, or indeed their local butcher,” he added.
