Alara to increase cherry exports by 40 per cent

Turkish exporter Alara Agri Business expects to increase its exports of cherries from 7,000 to 10,000 tonnes in 2006.

According to the man voted Turkish Entrepreneur of the Year, the CEO of the company, Kerim Taner, this will be accompanied by a rise in exports of figs from 1.2 million to 1.5m boxes. Investment in a new machine in the packhouse has doubled the company’s cherry packing capacity.

As part of Alara’s quality assurance process 1,143 cherry-growers and 600 fig producers received EurepGAP certification last year. “This year we intend to achieve the objective of 3,500 enterprises,” Taner said, adding that he is looking to implement more packaging and machinery in 2006.
