Airfreight labels take off at M&S

Marks & Spencer is to start labelling it airfreighted food this week as part of its £200 million Plan A project.

A label that features an aeroplane symbol and the words ‘air frieighted’ will appear on 20 produce lines, including beans, mangetout and strawberries.

Some 150 products will be marked out by the end of the year.

M&S director of food Guy Farrant said: “Our customers want to know more about how food is transported to the UK. We already label all our food with its country of origin and, in many cases, we also include the name of the famer on pack.

“We’re putting an aeroplane symbol on the small amount of food we transport by air we know this is something our customers care about.”

The initiative sits alongside others in the Plan A portfolio including sourcing as much foo from the UK and Ireland as possible, doubling regional sourcing, growing existing supply networks and minimising the amount of airfrieghted products.
