The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has drafted new recommendations for airfreight security following October’s failed parcel bomb plot on two US-bound flights.

The ICAO announced that revised supply chain security guidelines will be sent to all 190 member countries in the coming weeks and will be finalised in 2011, news site IHS Jane’s reported.

The guidelines were framed by a panel of experts within ICAO and were approved by its governing council last month.

They focus on measures to inspect cargo before it is sent to the airport, as well as processes to protect shipments from interference before loading.

International Air Transport Association security director Ken Dunlap said it was focusing on getting data on shipments “much faster”, advancing cargo screening technology and creating full supply chain co-operation.
