British agriculture uses just 1.8% of the nation’s energy, yet produces 70% of its food needs. This is the line from the Agricultural Industries Confederation, which says that Britain’s farm supply network is already preparing to address the challenges posed by climate change.

“What’s more, the agriculture, with all its supporting industries, produces 40% more energy in food than is consumed in its production,” said Jane Salter, AIC’s Head of Environmental Policy.

However, the agrisupply industry is not ignoring the challenges that climate change pose. AIC has set up working parties to address the issues raised in the Stern Report.

“Economic and competitive pressure has already driven many manufacturing facilities towards maximising energy efficiency,” said Salter. “Nevertheless opportunities still exist to make marginal improvements in manufacturing as well as in areas such as transportation and packaging.”
