Yorkshire's Regional Agricultural Centre

The construction team behind the award-winning Regional Agricultural Centre (RAC) in Yorkshire has gone into administration.

Houseman & Falshaw made the announcement not long after planning permission for a project with Greyfriars Ltd that would have earned the firm around £1 million was refused.

The company, established in 1979, worked on a wide variety of construction and civil engineering projects, from office and factory developments to roads and golf courses, as well as farming 155 acres of land planted with winter wheat and other seasonal crops.

Its main source of work was public sector contracts which have experienced a significant downturn as a result of cuts in Government funding together with the general economic downturn.

The company has ceased trading on appointment of administrators and all 75 employees have been made redundant.

The plant and machinery and crop assets of the company are being sold by Edward Symmonds LLP.

Managing director of Greyfriars’ Northern Mushrooms business, John Smith, said: “They were a well-established, competent business and did a lot in agriculture. It’s one of those sad spin-offs that sometimes happens.”

Howard Smith and Mark Firm of KPMG have been appointed joint administrators.
