Agrexco doubles pomegranate exports

Agrexco is doubling its pomegranate exports to 6,500 tonnes this season.

The campaign, which kicked off in mid-August and will end in March 2010, will mark an impressive increase in the volume of exported pomegranates - a total of 10 million extra fruits.

In the last couple of years, growers in Israel have been encouraged to plant more and more high-quality pomegranate varieties.

Agrexco product manager Bezalel Madmon said: “Christmas is expected to mark a peak in demand and we are continuing the tradition we have started last year, offering an individual huge pomegranate, packed in an attractive, stylised pomegranate purse. We have also increased our exports of peeled and separated pomegranate arils."

The first shipments of Cramel-branded pomegranates from Mitzpe Shalem, near the Dead Sea, reached Europe in the second half of July.

The fruit is grown in a range of different Israeli regions to ensure continuous supply, from the desert of the Negev Plateau to the semi-desert Haarava region and the Gedera region.

This season, Agrexco pomegranates will head to the UK, Russia, Italy, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain, as well as customers in the Far East and South Africa.
