Green meshes, sometimes known as Micromesh, may cause crops to rot, says Agralan Limited.

Agralan, which offers a range of products that allow growers to reduce or avoid the need for pesticide application, has warned growers to do their research before purchasing green meshes to protect vegetable crops from insect damage.

Extensive independent research carried out across several European locations, which examined mesh netting in relations to insect pest control and resulted in the product Enviromesh, found that the netting should be clear as aphids are attracted to green mesh and that the size and weight of the mesh is important.

As clear mesh, Enviromesh allows maximum light penetration and airflow for long term covering, whilst being lightweight and flexible. A finer mesh Enviromesh Ultra Fine, which is mainly used for the protection of rocket and similar crops, is a short-term covering and has the additional benefit of stopping the flea beetle.

Managing director of Agralan, Alan Frost, said: “My concern is that some meshes on the market haven’t been sufficiently tested and are therefore making claims they simply can’t fulfill.”
