AG Thames has acquired the exclusive production and marketing rights for UK grown Sweet Sensation pears.

The new variety, which is owned by Next Fruit Generation, is being planted in substantial volumes around the world following successful early production years in The Netherlands and Belgium. Year-round supply is guaranteed with plantings in South Africa, Chile and Argentina, as well as France and Italy.

First commercial volumes of the new UK crop are expected to be available within three years. “We are always looking for points of difference for the English grower,” said Leon Aichen, executive chairman of AG Thames. “Sweet Sensation is a very good eating pear that has great potential for success in the premium UK supermarket ranges.”

Joop van Doorn, chief executive of Next Fruit Generation, added: “It has traditionally been older consumers eating pears, but we think this attractive new pear will bring younger consumers into the category.”
