The Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) is welcoming entries for the Community Heroes Award 2008. In its third year, the award sets the benchmark for small retail outlets nationwide by rewarding retailers who perform to high standards within the convenience store sector.

ACS is asking as many retailers as possible to enter the competition and entries for the awards are encouraged from retailers who have achieved something that has made a real difference to their community within the last year. A panel of industry experts will choose three finalists and then an online vote on the ACS website will decide the winner.

All three finalists will attend ACS Summit at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole on April 24, 2008, and the winner will be announced at the gala dinner following the conference.

Winner of last year’s award, Martin Lovell, owner of Shobdon Village Stores in Herefordshire, said: “Winning the ACS Community Hero award was a great thrill. The whole process saw our local community get behind us, encouraging us to do well. After we won we received a lot of local praise, local and trade press coverage, and some very positive comments from other retailers. It reassured us that we are doing the right thing and reinforced our motivation to continue investing in the community, that invests in us as a business.”

Along with the honour of being crowned Community Hero 2008, the winner will be awarded a cheque for the sum of £1,000. The deadline for entries is Thursday March 13, 2008.
