The ABP group, which handles a significant proportion of produce entering and leaving the UK saw a rise in turnover of six per cent, to £213.7 million in the first six months of its financial year. Underlying pre-tax profits were up by two per cent.

ABP intends to continue to increase profits by gaining long-term contracts with clients.

Fifty per cent of its UK ports' business is now fixed by contracts which brings in stable revenue.

The group will be investing capital in new developments around the country, from Teignmouth in Devon to Troon in Scotland.

Bo Lerenius, ceo of the group, said: 'This performance is particularly pleasing given the current uncertain economic climate and once again, demonstrates the advantage of pursuing a strategy of developing new business with long term contracts and quality customers.'
