Organic veg box specialist Abel & Cole is up for sale, FPJ understands.
Suppliers have told FPJ they believe the company is on the market and a spokesman added: “We are looking for some investment, but we have no news on this at present.”
Tesco is rumoured to be among those interested in the home-delivery business, with sources claiming it is looking to respond to Ocado’s success in that segment. A spokesman for Tesco declined to comment.
In its latest accounts, for the year to 31 August 2011, Abel & Cole turned over £35.7m, a 25 per cent increase on 2010, with pre-tax profits of £1.9m, up from a £234,000 loss.
