Researchers at The Volcani Center in Israel have developed a new variety of red pomelo, reportedly sweeter and juicier than the original variety. Its added advantage: it has no pits.

Tal Amit, in charge of r&d at the Citrus Marketing Board of Israel, said that the new variety can be grown throughout the citrus season. It is expected to double the export of this type of citrus by expanding the acreage planted.

The main markets are Japan, South Korea and west Europe.

Tal added that the new red pomelo is just one of the varieties being grown only in Israel, suitable for cultivation in warm regions, such as the Jordan and Jezreel Valleys and the Northern Negev.
