A million punnets of strawberries can now be stored in the new eco-friendly coldstore at Tiptree, following a £2 million investment programme.

Wilkin & Sons Limited has built the energy-efficient coldstore, adjacent to a new fruit sorting and freezing unit where Tiptree strawberries will be washed, sorted and frozen, ready for storage on site.

Ian Thurgood, joint managing director of Tiptree, said: “Together with our recently opened honey plant, this new coldstore and individually quick frozen fruit plant form part of a major investment programme for the company. Strong business growth has been a key factor in our decision to invest in Tiptree at a time when local confidence most needs a boost.”

Quick-freezing each individual fruit preserves the flavour and keeps each individual fruit whole.

Tiptree also supplies loganberries and plums as well as strawberries.

The new coldstore with low-energy lighting, mobile racking system to maximise space and high-efficiency insulation to save on energy replaces less efficient, conventional freezer stores at Tiptree and off site.
