Fourayes is set to open a new £1 million storage facility for Bramley apples.
The Kent grower and supplier to the processing sector has invested in a new hanger-sized facility featuringDynamically Controlled Atmosphere storage. It will allow apples destined for pies, pastries and desserts to be kept in optimum condition for a year.
Dynamically Controlled Atmosphere storage allows the oxygen levels to be reduced to efficiently put the apples into a state of sleep. Computers monitor the stress in the apples and minutely adjust oxygen levels so they are always kept at the point where they store at their best.
The technology eliminates the need for preservative treatments, reduces waste and ensures that the Bramley apple crop can be fully optimised, according to the company.
The new facility, which will be officially opened on 8 September by Faversham & Mid Kent MP Helen Whately, will hold almost 1,000 tonnes of apples. The project was part-funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
