Covent Garden Market Authority (CGMA) has unveiled details of the site’s new identity, under the tag Brand New Covent Garden Market.
Despite postponing a lunch reception on 24 June at which the new identity was due to be revealed, CGMA nevertheless released details of what it said would be a “brand new, better market for our wholesalers and customers. A better place to trade produce. A better place to buy.”
A website has been launched with the plans. It outlines six distinct areas within the reconstructed site – The Fruit & Veg Market, The Flower Market, The Food Hub, The Support Services, The Garden Heart and The Food Quarter.
The Garden Heart is described as “London’s foremost place for the exchange and convergence of ideas, commerce, intellect and experience” in the food and floral industries. It includes four storeys of education space, specialist food retailers and workspaces, as well as rooftop gardens.
The Food Quarter will feature stalls, specialist food and flower shops, cafes and restaurants.
Tenants’ association (CGTA) chair Gary Marshall said that for traders, logos and “glossy pictures” were unimportant compared to issues around the decant and migration strategy and how they are going to continue to trade successfully during the seven years of the rebuild. “If you can get people confident in that change they will support it,” he said.
He added talks between CGTA and CGMA are ongoing and further meetings are planned.
