Hortyfruta managing director María José Pardo Losilla presented the fresh produce awards

Tesco was crowned Hortyfruta Multiple Fresh Produce Retailer of the Year, while Sainsbury’s was named Supermarket of the Year at a glittering London awards ceremony on Thursday.

The UK’s number-one supermarket walked off with the top produce gong at the 2009 Retail Industry Awards.

Sainsbury’s took home the top supermarket gong for delivering "value with values", while Landmark Wholesale walked off with the other top gong, scooping the Outstanding Achievement award.

Londis, Nisa Local and Spar all picked up accolades, while Morrisons and Asda had strong showings at the annual bash, attended by retailers of all sizes.

Creightons of Finaghy in Belfast won the Hortyfruta Independent Fresh Produce Retailer of the Year for its close links with suppliers and support of staff.

Budgens landed the judge’s choice Independent Company Owned Fresh Produce Retailer of the Year for its work in producing a seasonal wallplanner for buyers.
