Reuben blackberry reaps industry recognition

The Reuben blackberry has been named best new blackberry the International Produce Awards held by Asda/Walmart-owned supplier International Produce.

The honour was official recognition for the Reuben, which developer Hargreaves Plants believes is now the most widely-grown primocane blackberry in the Europe.

The Reuben was also nominated for the Colour-Your-Life award at the IPM home and garden show in Essen, Germany.

Jamie Petchell, commercial director of Hargreaves Plants, said: "We are very pleased with the progress made by Reuben for both the fresh fruit and home garden markets.

“We originally selected it in 2006 and now that larger scale trials have been completed, plant sales are taking off.”

Hargreaves Plants is scaling up the plant production of Reuben to meet the increased market demand.
