Parsnip producer lands gong

A Staffordshire producer has won the fresh produce category at the prestigious Heart of England Fine Foods (HEFF) Diamond Awards with its British parsnips.

R & RW Bartlett, based in Shenstone, was unveiled as the winner of the fresh produce category, sponsored by Whittingham Riddell, at the fourth annual HEFF Diamond Awards which took place on Saturday in Birmingham.

The British parsnips were up against five other products in the final; Eslanta Strawberries and Hertford Cherries, both from Clives Fruit Farm, Worcestershire, Jubilee Strawberries and Maravilla Raspberries, both from AJ & CI Snell, Herefordshire, and Rainbow Salad from Aconbury Sprouts, Herefordshire. The judges said of the British Parsnips: “This product had a beautiful, even shape and was very tender, almost creamy in taste with an excellent sweetness and good crisp edges.”

Judy Yarwood from R & RW Bartlett said: “This is wonderful news, we are all very excited to have won the award. This demonstrates that we are continuing to drive the business forward in the fresh produce industry by focusing on quality, taste and value for money which is exactly what our customers demand.”

The evening was hosted by BBC Midlands Today’s Suzanne Virdee.
