Ian Mitchell will step down after 16 years

After more than 16 years at the helm, Ian Mitchell is to step down as chairman of the Bramley Campaign at the end of July.

The campaign was created in 1989 to protect the interests of UK Bramley growers and to educate consumers about the apple’s superior culinary properties.

During his time as chairman, Mitchell has implemented a series of initiatives to ensure Bramley remains an ingredient on the British menu, introducing Bramley Apple Week as a key calendar event for journalists and retailers and liaising closely with food writers and chefs to promote the cooking apple.

Mitchell also oversaw the introduction of the Brammy Awards to recognise manufacturers of outstanding Bramley products, and developed the Bramley Bursary student catering competition to encourage young chefs.

Adrian Barlow, chief executive of English Apples & Pears and the Dessert Apple Campaign, will now take responsibility for the campaign.

Mitchell, pictured, said: “I’m sad to be moving on, but I am satisfied that the Bramley Campaign is in excellent shape. For some time Adrian has been taking on much more of the responsibility, and I’m sure he is the right person to take the campaign forward. It’s been a great challenge and hugely enjoyable, but 16 years is a long time, and I feel I am now at a point in life where I should concentrate on other things.”

Barlow added: “Ian has done an outstanding job as chairman and has been a superb ambassador for Bramley. I’m delighted to be taking the reins of the campaign and am very much looking forward to finding more opportunities for the world’s finest cooking apple.”
