Visitors to Fruit Logistica crowned a device designed to remove pomegranate seeds made by the company Mehadrin Tnuport Export of Israel as the winner of the event's prestigious Innovation Award.

The Arils Removal Tool (ART) was voted the winner of the Fruit Logistica Innovation Award (FLIA) 2010 following its nomination alongside other cutting-edge produce inventions this year.

The device facilitates the quick, clean and easy removal of seeds from pomegranates, allowing consumers to conveniently enjoy this vitamin-rich fruit.

Noa Ohad of Shoham Product Development collected the award from Fruchthandel managing director Robert Broadfoot and Fruit Logistica global brand manager Gerald Lamusse at a ceremony at the event’s close on Friday.

Mehadrin expects the development of the ART to increase the sale of pomegranates.

Second place went to the Dutch HZPC Holland BV for the Pommonde Potato Taste Concept, which offers consumers innovative and practical guidance in purchasing potatoes.

Third place was awarded to Unitec S.p.A. from Italy for its QS_300 portable quality control device - this unit enables the user to quickly inspect and determine the inner quality of all major varieties of stonefruit and top fruit.

The competition saw the late withdrawal of Fyffes’ wax-tipped banana entry due to an issue with trademarking.

Its Fyffes Organic Bananas were fancied to do well at the awards but had to be withdrawn as the nomination brought the product to the attention of Pacific Coast Eco Bananas, an Australian company which has been selling wax-tipped bananas for ten years.

Fyffes withdrew the entry following the receipt of documentation from Australian and overseas trademark authorities.
