McDonalds turns to biodiesel

Fast food chain McDonalds has been recognised by an environmental awards scheme for its work in using waste cooking oil to fuel its delivery fleet.

Shortlisted as a finalist in this year’s Business Commitment to the Environment (BCE) at the Environmental Leadership Awards, which takes place at the Lincoln Centre London in June, McDonalds has been selected for its work on converting its delivery fleet to run on biodiesel. The fuel is being used following extensive trials by McDonalds and its distribution partner Keystone, which began in August 2006.

Once the changeover has been completed, McDonalds will have the largest distribution fleet in the UK to run on 100 per cent biodiesel. The CO2 saving is estimated at 1,675 tonnes a year - the equivalent of removing more than 2,400 family cars from the road every year.
