Giant strawberry M and S

The King Strawberry

Premium retailer Marks and Spencer has exclusively launched giant strawberries in time for Valentine’s Day.

The Spanish-grown ‘King Strawberry’ is 30 per cent bigger than an average strawberry, and is being marketed as perfect for sharing.

It has been officially launched after trials last year proved its popularity.

Fruit destined for giant status is chosen on plants at the start of the season, and left to ripen for longer. This means they are larger and sweeter than the average strawberry.

M&S said it is currently seeing high demand for the popular soft fruit, with sales up 25 per cent on this time last year.

Bill Davies, M&S fruit expert, said that the jumbo King strawberries are perfect for two and are also known as an aphrodisiac.

“These jumbo King strawberries are delicious on their own or made extra special by dipping in melted chocolate for the ultimate Valentine’s treat,” he said.

M&S has a reputation for selling unusual sized fruit – in the past they have sold the tiny ‘Tiddly Pomme’ apple and the giant ‘Satsumo’ Satsuma.

King Strawberries are available in stores nationwide, at £6.99 per punnet.
