Global citrus brand Jaffa has put its weight behind the Street Athletics scheme this summer.

The 60-metre running initiative is led by Olympic gold-medal-winning sprinters Linford Christie and Darren Campbell and culminated in a grand-final last Saturday in Manchester.

Some of the fastest youngsters from across England raced to become the Street Athletics Grand Final winners of 2009 in four different age groups.

From over 20 heats across towns and cities in England, the 180 finalists represented some of the nation’s best young sprinters.

However, the ultimate aim is for young people from all areas to feel welcome and take an active part, providing the opportunity to broaden their existing horizons within sport and non-sport related areas.

Jaffa provided thousands of clementines throughout the summer for the campaign giving away more than 1,500 pieces of fruit at Saturday’s finals alone. Phil Brown of MTEX, which supplied the fruit said: “Jaffa’s message - Love life, love Jaffa! - and its involvement in accessible sporting events encourages kids to eat fruit for fun and health.”

“It has been great to have the support of Jaffa this year,” Darren Campbell, Olympic Gold medallist and organiser of Street Athletics. “As athletes we know the importance of fruit in our diets, and the clementines are really popular at all the events.”

Rising star Antoe Walters won the male U20 race in a time of 7.01 while the U17, U15 and U13 male winners were Terry Scott, Lloyd Denny and Oliver Cole respectively. Monica Bramwell took home the female U20 crown and U17, U15 and U13 winners were Annie Tagoe, Vanessa La Fon and Tanisha Somers.
