Growers in Guernsey have seen a double landmark this month, recognised by the Queen on two fronts.

Horticulturist David Miller has been awarded an MBE for services to horticulture, both in Guernsey and further afield.

Miller, who was born in Wiltshire, is well-known as a consultant to the Eden Project in Cornwall.

He held the post of director of the Guernsey States Horticultural Advisory Service, as well as being the former president of the Guernsey Growers’s Association. He is a member of the Guild of Freemen of the City of London. Over many years he has exhibited at the Chelsea Flower Show and has won a number of gold awards in a broad career.

Meanwhile, Guernsey tomato grower Albert Roussel celebrated his 100th birthday, and subsequent letter from the Queen, following an illustrious career including the establishment of the family-owned Roussel Bros. Ltd business before World War II.

Roussel formed the family tomato-growing business with his two brothers John and Osmond, later becoming a director of the company and its secretary. "I have always tried to lead a healthy life," he said.
