The UK's first-ever commercial crop of watermelon radish has been grown by G's.
The photogenic vegetable, which G's hopes will get a boost from lovers of sharing food on social media, is currently being harvested by the company. It is described as being mild, with only slightly peppery notes and features a bright interior.
G's product innovation manager Emma Watson said the grower has been working on small scale trials for over five years to get the crop densities and growing conditions right. This year's first small commercial crop will be sold to the specialist wholesale market for the rest of the UK summer season.
“Through our investigations in the States we are seeing a surge in interest in California, where watermelon radish is a super on-trend vegetable in upscale salad bars and restaurants,' said Watson. 'If you search for watermelon radish on Instagram you see a huge interest in the product, which dazzles a vibrant pink when cut open.”
Radish is one of the fastest-growing fresh produce items and is a new entry in the FPJ Big Products 2018 on account of its upward trajectory.
