Dutch produce giant The Greenery has won a Netherlands government Lean & Green award.
Lean & Green is an incentive programme to encourage businesses to attain a higher level of sustainability by taking measures to increase their efficiency and reduce their ecological footprint.
The Greenery will be monitored to make sure it achieves its targets over the next five years to reduce its CO2 emissions by at least 25 per cent per kilo of product sold.
Philip Smits, general manager of The Greenery said: “The most significant savings can be achieved on energy consumption in the distribution centres, as well as by reducing vehicle mileage and fuel consumption for transport purposes.
"This sustainability policy enables The Greenery to deliver fresher products even faster with significantly lower CO2 emissions per kilo of product.”
