Conifer spotlight brightens

Organisers of National Conifer Week have launched a new campaign to encourage the public to grow conifers and boost sales.

The ‘Colour My Conifers’ initiative is being run in garden retailers nationwide as part of a package of promotional ideas to re-educate customers on the benefits of growing the plants.

HTA members who have registered for National Conifer Week have been issued with point-of-sale material, including a colour chart showing how conifers can be matched to different coloured accessories, and a promotional banner. They are also able to purchase copies of the RHS/HTA ‘Easy Guide to Growing Conifers’, as well as a DVD targeting retailers and customers who are reluctant to prune conifers, which gives tips and tricks for trimming, shaping and pruning.

Organisers are also encouraging retailers to create conifer ‘hotspots’, using pots to demonstrate to customers how to design their own ‘special conifer planting recipes’.

John Adlam, horticultural consultancy adviser and managing director of Dove Associates, said: “People are often reluctant to prune conifers, but they are quite resilient so if in doubt, trim it out.”

National Conifer Week 2007 will take place from September 29 to October 1, and is being funded by the HDC and HTA. British gardeners spend more than £20 million on over 500 varieties of conifers every year. The objective of the promotional week is to provide support for retailers to educate their customers on the benefits of growing conifers in their gardens.
