Co-op tastes tomato success

Customers at The Co-operative were treated to tasting sessions across the country last week in celebration of British Tomato Week.

Customers were invited to taste new variety Tiger, together with Amoroso, Elegance, Piccolo and Sunstream, plus classic round tomatoes. Those sampling were happy to complete a brief questionnaire and from the positive feedback it was clear that demand for British tomatoes remains strong.

The Co-op has been a long-term supporter of British produce and took up the opportunity to highlight the freshness and quality of the home-grown tomatoes being offered in its store.

Carla Mills, category buyer for The Co-operative, was joined in store by suppliers Capespan, Evesham Vale Growers and IVG White in various stores across the country.

She said: “The Co-operative continue to actively seek British produce, and with the support of our growers we can provide a fantastic range of tomatoes through the summer. There is still great interest in full flavoured speciality varieties, particularly the smaller and sweeter varieties such as Piccolo and Sunstream.

“Where other retailers have sought cheaper alternatives during the current economic climate, we value the strong relations with we have built with our growers and will continue our focus on offering great flavoured British tomatoes.”
