A carrot called Kevin has been revealed as the star of Aldi’s Christmas advert after weeks of anonymous teasers from the discounter.

Journalists were kept guessing when the retailer planted anonymous clues of its Christmas advert, including a Kevin the Carrot Twitter profile and anonymous gifts to newspapers bearing the slogan: “Legends aren’t born, they’re grown.”

Metro suspected that Kevin was the face of John Lewis’ Christmas advert, but on 7 November Aldi put these rumours to bed when it unveiled the character as its own Christmas mascot.

The advert, which is narrated by Golden Globe-winning actor Jim Broadbent, follows the 3-inch tall carrot as he picks his way through a lavish but treacherous Christmas spread to meet Santa, before being whisked off on his sleigh.

It aired for the first time at 11.40am on ITV on 7 November.

Tony Baines, joint managing director of corporate buying at Aldi, said: “We’ve had an incredibly successful year at Aldi and our Christmas advert aims to celebrate our award-winning products; commitments to fresh, British, quality produce; and, of course, our show-stopping festive range.

“We hope viewers enjoy watching Kevin The Carrot’s story as his adventures unfold throughout the season.”

Aldi will be hoping to replicate the success of its UK rival Sainsbury’s, whose World War One-inspired advert in 2014 was widely considered the best Christmas advert of the year.

Following their success this year, Aldi will continue to extend its premium ranges, Specially Selected and Specially Selected Exquisite, over the festive period.
