Prepared salad sales are growing at Sainsbury's

Sainsbury's has announced a 26 per cent year-on-year growth across its own-brand salad bowl range.

Reflecting on the summer launches of several new products, the UK's third-biggest supermarket says the launch of a mixed leaf salad bag - a 200g combination of Batavia, Apollo, Butterhead and Radicchio - has attracted new customers to the category. The 'By Sainsbury's' branded bag, which launched in May, was produced with families in mind and is now 'firmly positioned' in the supermarket's top 10 sales for bagged-salad lines.

Sainsbury's also recently launched three new Taste the Difference Salad Bowls, including a tomato and mozzarella salad bowl complete with pesto dressing; a sweet piquillo pepper salad which includes Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference tomatoes; and a Moroccan style salad that uses a Ras el Hanout spice mix in the sweet and spicy dressing.

A spokesperson told FPJ: 'Our prepared salads category is growing positively and the new lines have done well.In order to make our Taste the Difference salad bowls more accessible to our customers we have included the bowls as part of our £3 sandwich meal deal in our convenience stores. Customers can now replace their lunchtime sandwich with one of our five Taste the Difference salad bowls.'

Own-label sales are up seven per cent for the retailer, with its premium Taste the Difference rangegrowing by 10 per cent, in the first quarter of 2013, to reach£1billion in sales.
