WRAP aims to lower industry waste

Foodservice group Compass has signed up to WRAP’s Hospitality and Foodservice Agreement in a bid to help achieve waste reduction targets set for the UK fresh produce industry.

The Hospitality and Foodservice Agreement has targeted reducing food and associated packaging waste by five per cent before the end of 2015, and to increase the amount of waste recycled, sent to anaerobic digestion and composted by 70 per cent during the same period.

WRAP predicts that UK businesses who sign up could save up to £76 million by the end of 2015. So far, 69 leading UK organisations have also signed up to the agreement including Sodexo, BaxterStorey, Compass, Domino’s Pizza, Unilever Food Solutions and Greggs.

“One of the big challenges the hospitality and foodservice sector currently faces, as identified by WRAP’s research, is tackling the vast amount of food and packaging waste it produces and currently disposes of to landfill each year,” said Liz Goodwin, CEO of WRAP.

Goodwin added: “The joint agreement between WRAP, all four UK governments and industry will tackle this issue, and by working together we can reduce the environmental impact from waste produced by the hospitality and foodservice sector, while reaping the financial benefits.”

Compass says it will now work closely with existing clients, suppliers, customers and employees to improve the sustainability of the waste management processes already in place.

Sachin Sharma, Compass' head of environment, added: “I genuinely believe that by joining forces with WRAP as an industry we can achieve these important targets and reduce our environmental footprint.”
