Tesco is set to cater for mango lovers with the launch of a giant sized fruit.
Going into stores nationwide from today (Sunday), the giant mango, which weighs around 900 grams, will be available for six weeks.
Damien Sutherland, buying manager for exotics, said: “At the moment it’s a seasonal product that’s coming in from Israel. Not every country can grow them, but if it performs well, we’ll see if we can find other sources.”
In the meantime Tesco has also recently re-introduced its Fairtrade mango following a break in supply.
Sutherland said the concept was launched earlier in the year but the seasonal nature meant the line had been off shelves for a period.
“We brought it back in a month and half ago and it will now run until October. There’s huge potential for Fairtrade in fresh produce.”
He said the initial launch did not generate huge demand from consumers, but with promotion, sales have picked up and stayed strong.
