US fast-food giant Wendy’s has dealt a blow to the healthy eating movement after scrubbing fruit salads from its menu.

The chain has removed the offer from all of its restaurants across the US and Canada in response to poor sales.

The decision comes just 10 months after the fruit bowls were launched by Wendy’s in response to the US government’s launch of dietary guidelines urging consumers to eat more fruit and veg.

The company promoted the bowls as offering an easy convenient way to get half the daily intake of fruit recommended by the government.

However, according to reports, Wendy’s said that despite putting a “strong effort” behind the product, it “was not meeting our expectations”.

The bowl featured melon, pineapple chunks and red seedless grapes, all supplied by Del Monte.

Despite the set-back to the fruit industry, McDonalds, which is the largest purchaser of apples in the US, said it remained committed to its fruit products.
