Waitrose sees sales rise

The John Lewis Partnership has revealed its results for the half-year period ended 31 July 2010, with positive news for its grocery operation Waitrose.

According to the group, gross sales at Waitrose increased 11.3 per cent to £3.8 billion through the six-month period, up £245 million on the same period of 2009.

Like-for-like sales, taking into account food only, climbed 3.9 per cent, the group said, while Waitrose's operating profit saw healthy growth of 6.2 per cent to £127.8m.

In addition, the partnership noted that it had added an extra 75,000 square footage in selling space through the half-year period, with nine new branches added, of which three were in its convenience format.

Earlier in the week, new data from market analyst Kantar Worldpanel had revealed that Waitrose's UK grocery market share increased during the 12 weeks to 5 September, up from 3.9 per cent in 2009 to 4.1 per cent this year.
