Market traders are finding it tough as supermarkets get more powerful

Two ever-present fruit and veg traders at a twice-weekly market have called it a day.

The Berwick Advertiser reported that Mary and Paul Murray made their last appearance at the town's Marygate market on Saturday (5 July).

The pair, who live in Belford, Northerumberland, have decided to quit due to 'personal circumstances'.

They told the Advertiser that the market was thriving when they arrived on the scene, but that they have witnessed its general decline over the years.

“Every time a supermarket opened, our trade got less and less,” Mr Murray told the paper.

“I think the final straw might have been when Home Bargains started selling potatoes,” his wife added.
