US department of agriculture plant breeders have developed a low-sugar watermelon.

The new melons still have a green skin and red flesh, but contain less than half the sugar content of other varieties.

The department’s agricultural research service thinks the new fruits will be welcomed by the US’s 21 million diabetics.

“A little artificial sweetener can be sprinkled on to the fruit to give it a flavour that’s comparable to conventional watermelons,” said Erin Peabody, a spokeswoman for the agricultural research service.

The new melon contains rich concentrations of vitamin A, potassium and the antioxidant lycopene.
